Arlington is the east bank of the St. Johns River across the Mathews Bridge from downtown Jacksonville, running out along the Arlington Expressway, Atlantic Boulevard and Monument Road to Regency Square and Fort Caroline. It grew fastest between 1950 and 1975, so the streets are full of concrete block ranch homes with low-slope hip roofs, many still on original plank or plywood decking, some under a second layer of asphalt shingles. Newer pockets near Girvin Road and the Intracoastal add 1990s and 2000s shingle subdivisions and a few metal roofs.

Arlington was Jacksonville's postwar growth area, and the roofing reflects it. From the foot of the Mathews Bridge out through University Park and Southside Estates to Fort Caroline, most homes are single-story concrete block ranches built between the early 1950s and the mid 1970s, with low-pitched hip roofs and eaves that overhang carports and screened porches. The low pitch means wind-driven summer rain and nor'easter bands have more time to work under shingles, and valleys and dead ends behind chimneys hold debris from the live oaks and pines that shade the older streets. Regency and Girvin add 1980s to 2000s subdivisions with steeper gables and 3-tab or early architectural shingles now at the end of their life. Insurance is the driver: many roofs are past the age at which Florida insurers ask for an inspection, so much of the work is documenting remaining life or replacing to earn a wind mitigation discount.
